The World Health Organization defines mental health as “a state of well-being in which the individual realizes their own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to their community.”

Students spend a considerable amount of time in school, and educators are often the first to notice any behavioral and physical changes. This toolkit is to help educators understand and identify the seven most common mental health challenges and disorders, and how to help children, youth, and their families get the appropriate Mental Health resources necessary to assist them. Many children and youth with a diagnosed mental health condition have experienced childhood trauma. Mental health problems are common, but they can improve over time with the proper treatment and support. The key is taking the necessary steps to get help.

This website is not intended to train educators to diagnose or treat mental health conditions. Instead, it is designed to help educators notice atypical behaviors in children or youth throughout the school day and provide families with appropriate resources and guidance. The diagnosis and treatment are the responsibility of health care professionals.

The toolkit also includes a 4½ hour video course that will assist educators in learning to identify the seven most common Mental Health challenges in children and youth. The training will also provide strategies that the educators can use to help students experiencing Mental Health Challenges.
